In 1934, the “FÁBRICA DE PRODUCTOS QUÍMICOS Y FARMACÉUTICOS ABELLÓ, S.A.” started the manufacture of opium alkaloids in Spain.

ALCALIBER,S.A. was founded in November 1973 with the objective of guaranteeing the supply of Narcotic Raw Materials, based on the cultivation in Spain of the opium poppy (Papaver Somniferum var. Nigrum) and its posterior transformation into opium poppy concentrate, with the extraction of its alkaloids.

In the course of 1973, an experimental cultivation program was implemented in different Spanish provinces – finally focusing activities on Western Andalusia, Extremadura and Lérida.

On November 8, 1974, ALCALIBER, S.A. was awarded the title of “Company authorized to conduct the pertinent activities in relation to the cultivation, harvesting, storage and production of opium poppy extracts, and to export the surplus production”.

In 1997, cultivation was extended to areas of Castilla – La Mancha and Castilla y León, with the adoption of world-leading agricultural irrigation systems that serve to ensure production stability.

The year 1978 was the year of inauguration of the industrial facilities where ALCALIBER processes the poppy harvest produced in Spain for the manufacture of opium poppy concentrate.

On November 17, 1986, the initial authorization was expanded to comprise the “Manufacture of narcotic substances for pharmaceutical, veterinary and industrial use, derived from opium poppy concentrate, as well as synthetic manufacture where applicable, according to processes known or that may become known in its facilities - with expansion of current authorization to also cover internal and external marketing of the mentioned products”.

In 2005, ALCALIBER opened a new production plant that improves and complements the already existing facilities in terms of quality and quantity. This new plant is equipped with the latest technological advances, and places ALCALIBER at the head of world narcotics production.

In 2008, the United States Drug enforcement Agency (DEA) included Spain among the countries authorized to export Narcotic Raw Materials to the United States.
